Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

If you avoided all activities that could cause you serious injury, you wouldn’t really be able to do anything, but when participating in certain activities and performing certain tasks it is wise to use caution. Some activities are far more likely to cause spinal cord injuries than others, and as this is one of the most painful and life changing injuries you can sustain, when doing these activities you should take the simple and commonsense precautions that can keep you safe.

Drive Safely

One of the most common ways people injure their backs is in road accidents. Driving to the conditions, not taking risks and respecting other users of the road are all simple ways to keep safe, yet people constantly place themselves and others in danger by choosing to drive recklessly. A need for speed isn’t worth risking your ability to walk.

Sometimes though, accidents just happen, but when they do, the likelihood of back injuries, and all other injuries for that matter, is drastically reduced when seatbelts are worn by the occupants of the vehicle. While it may seem obvious, you would be surprised how many people choose to not wear their seatbelt, or simply forget to put it on. Spinal damage is far more likely to occur if you are flung from a vehicle than if you remain strapped into it, so make sure you buckle up.

Most Accidents Happen At Home...

Household accidents, particularly falls, are also a common cause of spinal cord injuries. So, when using a ladder to put up the Christmas lights, or even just changing a light bulb, don’t do it alone. Having a spotter to hold the ladder and make sure it’s stable can make the difference between a life-changing fall and a prettily decorated house.

Stairs are also a place within the home which can result in serious back injury. A fall down a flight of stairs is something that can happen to anyone, so taking safety measures around this area of your home is important. If there are children in your household, putting a baby gate up at the top and bottom of the stairs is a good way to keep them safe.

Ensuring hand rails are secure and encouraging all members of the family use them is another good way to avoid falls.

These simple measures may just be enough to prevent you from suffering serious back injury.
